About the Film

The clock is ticking on the environmental disaster that is California's largest lake. The fish are gone. The birds are gone. But the people remain. The communities surrounding the Salton Sea tell their story about water, greed, art, tragedy, love, and perseverance.

Humanity's relationship with the environment is rapidly changing and nowhere is this dynamic more volatile than the Salton Sea. Located in the arid desert of Southern California, lies the state's largest lake and largest impending ecological catastrophe. As the shores of the Salton Sea recede, the dreams and livelihood of the locals disappear with it.

Overcoming the unique challenges of one of the hottest, driest places on Earth, the people of the Salton Sea shine with eccentric creativity and are committed to living a free life. Lithium Goldmine follows residents of Imperial and Riverside Counties who are impacted by the tumultuous ecology of a dying lake and how they embrace communal artistic expression.
